Gerard Depardieu directs and stars in this powerful story about the consequences of adultery upon a marriage. Set in a small prvincial French town in the 1960s, the film follows an unemployed builder (Depardieu) who goes to work on the construction of a new bridge. While he is away at work, his beautiful (Carole Bouquet) meets a man (Charles Berling) at one of the afternoon matinees that she frequents. It turns out that his is the engineer associated with her husband s new job. The two embark on an intense and uncontrollable affair that destroys her marriage.
